A house concert gathers a small number of people in
a living room to hear someone sing. The setting tends
to be cosy and personal. Colleen did an entire house
concert tour in September-October 2007, singing
in living rooms from Sask to BC and back.
The preparation and format for a house concert
are pretty simple.
You invite 10-30 friends to your house for the evening, and everyone buys a ticket or gives a suggested donation (usually $5-20).
You collect ticket money in advance or 'pass the hat' that night.
- It's ideal to sell tickets, trying to sell out 1-2 weeks in advance.
- Our goal is $250-500 in ticket sales/donations to cover our fee (more for travel outside the city).
- Usually a host will have to over-invite friends (20-60 people) to reach that number.
(Facebook events are one good way to put the word out to lots of people.)
We will give back 10% from all tickets, donations, and merchandise sales to the charity of
your choice. If you don't have a charity in mind, we can suggest one. Or, ask us about making it an official fundraiser.
We will provide an email invitation for you to send out to friends so that they can check out our site before signing up.
You or another tech-savvy person creates a Facebook event and invite all your cyber friends
You can print out tickets from a file I provide, to sell to interested friends when they see
each other.
For munchies, we recommend potluck, providing simple beverages or asking friends to bring their own to save on expensive spreads. We'll need table space and a helper for selling CDs and merchandise.
The evening usually starts around 7:30 or earlier, with music getting underway around 8 or 8:15. We play a 1 hour set, and then more food and mingling afterwards. The evening usually wraps up around 10:30 or 11:00.
These days, Dara & Colleen live pretty far apart, so you will probably book one or the other of us. Dara's in northern Saskatchewan and often visits the Regina area. Colleen is in Calgary.
Colleen brings a guitar and can usually perform "unplugged." Dara brings an electric keyboard so will need a place to plug in.
